Stephen Colbert breaks down the January 6 committee hearing during live monologue

Stephen Colbert on the January 6 committee hearing

"It's like Stranger Things: We met the monster years ago, and we're pretty sure the Russians are involved. And like the cast of Stranger Things, I have noticeably aged."

That was Stephen Colbert's introduction to day one of the Jan. 6 committee hearings on Thursday, as he took to the stage for a live Late Show monologue reflecting on the findings of the congressional committee investigating the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Over the next 10 minutes, Colbert broke down all the day's lowlights, from the Proud Boys going out for tacos just before the insurrection to Rep. Liz Cheney promising "evidence of what motivated this violence."

"Wow, they have footage of the former president's dad not hugging him?" responded Colbert.

Ultimately, though, he rounded things off with the following, sombre sentiment.

"After two hours of documentary evidence and testimony we learned that this insurrectionist conspiracy was, like everything else associated with that last administration: exactly what you thought, but worse than you could have imagined."
