Last year's debut of the AFLW, the women's iteration of Australia's national Australian rules football league, was a huge breakthrough for the country's male-dominated sporting landscape.

But another barrier could be broken in the case of 27-year-old transgender woman Hannah Mouncey, who on Friday announced her intention enter the 2018 AFLW draft.

She will be the first transgender person to play in the sport's top competition, pending approval from administrators.
