Trekkies are marking Sept. 28 as a special day.

It was 30 years ago that the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation first aired. Aboard the starship USS Enterprise, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (the role that introduced worldwide audiences to Patrick Stewart) led the crew through space adventures well into the future.

The series, which followed the final mission of the original Enterprise crew led by Captain Kirk (played by William Shatner), continued for seven years, with the final episode airing in 1994.
