CBS announced in early August that Erinn Hayes' character Donna in Kevin Can Wait would be DEAD when the show returns in season 2. The move, defended as being "right and fair" by an executive producer, is a means for the show to integrate Kevin James' King of Queens costar Leah Remini into the cast. Hello, I am an executive at CBS and I'll just come out and say it: killing Kevin's wife in the lighthearted comedy show Kevin Can Wait and replacing her with Leah Remini was literally our only option.
If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you. Yes, our family sitcom was the number one new comedy on television, but the writing was on the wall: if we did not canonically murder one of the primary characters, the show's ratings would begin to decline. Now that Donna is gone, Kevin can undertake any number of new, goofy single father/widower storylines that would have been otherwise impossible.
