Netflix cancels 'The Get-Down,' which puts it in a very exclusive club

The Get Down was one of Netflix's most divisive shows from the get-go, with critics alternately describing Baz Luhrmann's hip-hop drama as a "masterpiece" and a "mess." 

It was also rumored to be one of the streaming network's most expensive projects to date, with a budget reportedly in the ballpark of $120 million for its first and only season. The series also faced a string of production woes, from delays to rewrites to budgetary concerns, not to mention the exit of showrunner Shawn Ryan.

In short, it's probably no surprise that Netflix opted to cancel the show after Season 1 — especially since Luhrmann is focused on his upcoming film projects — although it does put the series into an exclusive and pretty depressing club, being one of the only shows Netflix has ever axed, and so far, the only series that has had its plug pulled after one season.  Read more...
