Some of us are so addicted to our internet TV services that it’s hard to imagine the entire category was pretty much unheard of just a decade ago. More to the point, while these services are taken for granted in markets like the US and UK, they are far from ubiquitous globally. Looking back, it was only in January 2016 that Netflix announced its big international push into 130 new countries, and there’s still a long way to go.
Okay so it took a while, but internet TV is now taking over the rest of the world, right? Well, not so fast. It turns out it’s not as simple as if you switch it on, they will come. In places like Poland and Kenya, internet TV services have been struggling to make headway. In Poland, this manifests in the form of significant piracy — surprisingly, much of the piracy is even paid for. In Kenya, people continue to stick to the old DVD and memory stick swapping routine, despite the obvious advantages of watching online. Read more...
