Being a comic book fan in 2017 is an emotional rollercoaster. Your favorite properties keep getting repackaged and rebooted for television and film, and sometimes your favorite hero turns out to be a Nazi.
On the page, though, Marvel was making strides, with heroes diverse in gender, race and sexuality. But according to the company's VP of sales, David Gabriel, those rare and valued qualities don't fly in sales.
"What we heard was that people didn't want any more diversity," Gabriel told ICv2 regarding the company's 2016 sales at the Marvel Retail Summit. "They didn't want female characters out there. That's what we heard, whether we believe that or not. I don't know that that's really true, but that's what we saw in sales." Read more...
